A Brief History of Debbi |

I was born in the fabulous
San Fernando Valley in the swinging 60's.I loved all the usual
kid's play; bicycling, swimming etc. I had a large fondness
for art and would draw and paint all the time (I still love
to, just need the time!). Of course music flowed through our
household. My older sister, Pam, had an extensive record
collection and it seemed as though the radio was on 24 hours a
day (I'm sure it wasn't). My parents were music lovers,
although they never really played any instruments (well, my
Dad had a trumpet when he was young..). It was a solid and
loving childhood, and I knew early on what I wanted to be when
I grew up!!! |

I had
various part time clerical jobs and did them ONLY for rent
money. I knew I wouldn't be doing them forever I was
determined to be in a success -full band with #1 hits on
the radio! (I was very narrow-minded!) Nothing was going to
stop me...
Oh I think I'm much better off now after
being away from the madness for a bit. I feel I
can handle things much more rationally than
before. But that could be maturity talking. I'm
much happier with my songwriting and my playing. I
get to play acoustic guitar now on stage (I did a bit with
Kindred Spirit, but never with the Bangles) and just
most recently managed to play bass!!! I appreciate the fact
that I have the freedom now to expand my musicality.
And we all are so much more supportive of each other.

I remember hearing "Getting Out Of Hand" our first self
made single being played on KROQ-"Rodney on the ROQ" and
screaming and hugging Vicki and dancing around. That was such
a breakthrough event. I also remember hearing "Manic Monday"
pouring out of someone's car radio in Washington DC
and we were all at a light waiting to cross the road. We
weren't even sure who it was at first! It was all so exciting.
The thing is, the changes in venues seemed pretty
gradual, but the work was coming fast and furious. We were
excited, but too busy to step back and take it all
in.

Well after the Bangles, I
took a few months off music. I didn't listen to it, didn't
care. The whole experience was so painful, I just hibernated
and visited family in LA and in England and stayed away from
the whole music scene. After awhile I hooked up with Gina
Schock from the Go Go's. We wrote some songs, but didn't quite
hit it off. Then I hooked up with Siobhan Maher who I'd met
years before. She had a band called "River City People" in
England. They had split up, so she was at loose ends too. We
talked and talked and got together and wrote some songs. We
hit it off so well that we named ourselves "Kindred Spirit".
We hooked up with Christian Nesmith (Michael's son) and he
accompanied us on a support tour of England with Joan
Armatrading! It was a blast and it really renewed my musical
faith. We recorded an album on the now defunct IRS label, but
unfortunately it never got the attention it deserved. Alas. I
then produced my BEST work, my son Brian, and spent a few
years being mumsy, until I started talking and working with
Susanna. |
