JULY 2002 ARCHIVE:
Glitter Years - With Paul Simon

Forget daytime talk shows, forget "insider" entertainment news programs - if it's celebrity dish you're after, then get yourself a latte and sit down with Susanna Hoffs! We did, and we weren't disappointed. Welcome back to our ongoing inside peek at
"The Glitter Years"…
I TAWT I TAW A PUDDY TAT

SUSANNA: This picture was taken backstage. You can always tell the backstage photos by the weird couch - there's always a weird couch somewhere backstage (she laughs). The Bangles were in Holland to perform, but we had a night off and went to see Paul Simon in Amsterdam. We had loved Simon and Garfunkel, and naturally we also loved Paul as a solo artist, and we were really happy to see perform and then go backstage for a meet-and-greet. This was after our version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" had come out, and although I don't think we talked about it very much, I remember he was very sweet, and I'm sure he was happy the song had done so well. I think it's always good to have your song covered, but it was a little uncomfortable talking to him about it, because when Simon and Garfunkel did the song, it had gone to #17, and the Bangles version went to #2. You're proud, of course, but you never want to come off as full of yourself or arrogant you know?

(We asked if she liked Amsterdam…) Oh, I love Holland, I absolutely love it! We really got into the Indonesian food they have there. We have this habit when we're on tour of going to a restaurant, and then deciding it's the best restaurant in the world and going to it over and over as long as we're in town, and there was this one little Indonesian place right around the corner from the hotel and I think we ate there at least once every day, maybe more. I know it sounds silly, but another thing we all liked about that trip is that they have really great hotel breakfasts in Amsterdam! On tour, usually you're in such a rush and you have to grab the little continental breakfast they bring you, and it's just a little croissant and maybe coffee, but in Amsterdam we got these great big breakfasts with all these fruits and cheeses and muesli and everything! Europeans take their breakfast very, very seriously. We appreciated that. (she laughs) Oh! My strongest memory from this trip is of this big club that we played - we went to the sound check, and we were working with the monitor man, who was just this nice Dutch guy, just the regular guy from the club. He didn't speak a lot of English. And we were looking over the mixing board and he had our names all written out next to the dial for each mic, and next to Debbi's it said "Debbi", and Michael's said "Michael", and Vicki's said "Vicki", and then in front of my mic it said…(she starts to giggle) …"Tweety"!! (Susanna dissolves in laughter.) Just "Tweety."!! (we asked what it meant…) I don't know! I still don't know!! The guy didn't speak any English, I mean, we tried to find out why it said that but no one seemed to be able to figure it out! Of course, then some guys in the crew started calling me Tweety and it stuck for the rest of the tour.
